The Amana Colonies were established by Germans fleeing religious persecution in their home country. Although the Amanas are based on the philosphy of communal living, they are NOT an Amish community. They were Pietists. The name Amana comes from the Song of Solomon 4:8. Amana means to “remain true. Seven villages comprise the Amana Colonies: Main Amana (Haupt-Amana), East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, West Amana, South Amana, and Homestead. The Amana Corporation, a refrigeration and electrical appliance company, is located in Middle Amana.

A commercial area south of the highway is called Little Amana, but is not an Amana Colony.
